Methanococcus maripaludis S2

A methane-producing archaeaon

Lineage: Archaea[167]; Euryarchaeota[119]; Methanococci[13]; Methanococcales[13]; Methanococcaceae[6]; Methanococcus[4]
Methanococcus maripaludis. Methanococcus maripaludis is an obligately anaerobic, mesophilic, methane-producing archaeon. Motility is by means of polar tufts of flagella. Growth occurs at 20-45oC with a pH of 6.5-8. Growth on hydrogen and carbon dioxide results in the production of methane as a waste product. M. maripaludis stands out among methanogenic archaea as an ideal model species because of fast reproducible growth and effective genetic tools. [Source: NCBI Genome ]
